If you have STATE.LOC files
Use this file to get the most from your STATE.LOC files
All features EXCEPT the F feature will function in CGA mode.
WORLD29 is shipped in CGA mode for maximum compatibility. FIRST MAKE A
WORKING COPY OF THE PROGRAM AND PUT THE ORIGINAL IN STORAGE.If your have an
EGA or VGA run the CREATOR program by typing CREATOR at the DOS prompt. When
you get the first menu type the letter W to create a new WORLD.CNF file. Until
you feel comfortable with all of the options I have provided default
answers to almost all of the questions asked. These default answers are
indicated by [] and are chosen by simply hitting the ENTER key in response to
the question. The only question you will need to answer is "is this ok?".
Type Y to answer this question and CREATOR will respond by writing a new
WORLD.CNF file to your disk.
To activate a STATE.LOC file you only need know what its name is and
where it is. When you start WORLD29 you will be asked for the "OVERLAY file
to use". The DEFAULT [SUP.DAT] (the provinces of Canada) is indicated. Simply
hit ENTER.
Next you are asked for the "Location file to use". The DEFAULT
[CUSTOM.LOC] is indicate but we will enter the name and location of the
STATE.LOC file here. If your state files are in the same directory as
WORLD29, on your hard disk, just type the name of the file. If you have the
FLORIDA.LOCation file you would just type FL.LOC and hit ENTER. If the file
you want is on a floppy disk in your B: drive type B:FL.LOC and hit ENTER.
If you have a subdirectory for a bunch of state files named STATES you could
type C:\STATES\FL.LOC.
Once you have the program running you can use option 14 from the main
menu to got back to the overlay and location questions to change the file in
use.
Now WORLD29 knows the location of virtually all towns and cities in the
selected state.
Option 7 includes virtually all of the towns and cities in the file you
selected. You can page through them by typing M and hitting ENTER - It may
take a while. Or you can jump around by preceding a number with a + sign. For
example to see the 1004th location in the file you would type +1004 and hit
the ENTER key. If you misjudged and overshot the name you were interested in
you could type +853. You can mix the + commands with the M commands to
locate whatever you want. To see where a particular town is just type its
number and create your map. TYPE END to exit to the main menu without going
through a map.
Option 4 will now search the active file for your search string. If you
want to find a town with BAY in it you would enter in response to the "What
combination of letters are you looking for" question. WORLD will then report
the first location it comes to with BAY anywhere in the name. Remember, it
will search the names of all of the world capitals before it gets to your
state list! If you don't like what you see you can tell WORLD29 to Look some
more by just typing L and hitting ENTER. For fun you could see the location
of all of the locations with BAY in their name by creating a map at this
point.
Select A for Area map. Then select 4 or 5 (in some cases you will get an
error using scale 5 - this has to do with the placement of some data at the
edge of the screen - if this happens try scale 4). When asked if you want
city names type the word NAMES and hit enter. This causes WORLD29 to filter
out all of the locations with your search criterion ( in this case BAY) and
to plot any of them that fall on your screen. There are various symbols which
have been randomly assigned indicating the display level of each location.
NOW EGA/VGA USERS can utilize the F option. While plotting the
locations of all of these places WORLD29 has been writting their names on a
hidden screen. This screen will only hold so much data, so from time to time
it will be quite messy! To see this screen you must have activated the
EGA/VGA options from WORLD.CNF. You must wait for the ? to appear in the
upper left of your screen after using the NAMES response to the CITIES
question. You must type the letter F in response to the ?. When you do you
will see a listing of as many locations as possible. This list also indicates
the display level and the symbol for that location. You can flip (F) back an
forth between this listing and the map as often as you wish --- as long as
you remember to reenter the F each time you leave the map. If you forget to
reenter the F on the map you will be returned to the main menu and have to
start over again. This feature has very little real value in this general
purpose program - it is something that I developed for a more specific
program I created for a special purpose - I left it here for your fun.
If you just hit ENTER in response to the Cities question you will just
get a map centered on the single location. Its name will be in the lower
left.
If you answer N you will get a map and no name of the location. If you
answer with a number you will only get locations at that display level.
ADVANCED USERS
As with most of my files these files are straight ASCII. You can, with
knowledge of your EDITOR or WORDPROCESSOR cut and paste these lists to make
your own custom listings. Just remember these lists are a result of my work.
You can do what you want to them for your personal use, but if you are using
my work in your company or for your profit I MUST be PAID for EACH computer
using my work!!!!!
By combining data from several files you can calculate the distance
between any two locations in the combined file or do any of the things
WORLD29 does. You can create a very powerful tool with this program and my
data bases. You can change the display level to suit your needs. The
structure of the files is NAME of LOCATION - must be in "" and must have
punctuation or a space, Latitude, Longitude, display level.
Making long lists has the disadvantage of slowing the operation of the
whole program. ONLY you can decide how long a .LOC file your machine and your
patience can handle. One of the advantages of WORLD29 is that YOU get to
make that decision.
